So, it's like this.. it's an Adam Sandler movie, so you know it's gonna be comedy. But it's an Adam Sandler movie, so you know it's gonna be physical comedy. Slapstick, physical comedy. But that's ok, cause those kind of movies catch my fancy too! Anyone remember "Waterboy" and "The Longest Yard"? I figured you would...

But anyway, I watched "You Don't Mess With The Zohan" (from hereon known as YDMWTZ... ok, maybe Zohan will be a lot easier) yesterday night.

One of the things that really took me aback about this movie is how good Adam Sandler actually looks! I mean, you've always seen him in this perpetual I-can't-come-my-hair hairstyle in most of movies and even out of it...

but his hair actually looks good in this movie!

Not only that, Sandler had to buff up in order to play the role of Zohan and after watching the movie, I'd say he did a pretty good job....(ignore the bulge.. if you can that is)

In this movie, Sandler takes a break from playing losers who get lucky, but instead plays the plot as an elite Israeli counter-terrorist army man who wows the clothes off (literally) almost everyone he comes across.... Sandler's Zohan has it totally made in Israel... except that he's sick of capturing and killing Palestinian baddies and harbours a dream to go to America and make it big as a hairstylist.....and that's basically the plot. Everything else in the sub-plot is basically the comedy.

Sandler's most famous ally definitely has a role to play in this movie as Salim, a cabdriver in America who wants to kill the Zohan....

none other than Rob Schneider, who ironically actually steals a bit of Sandler's thunder in this movie....

But that's not the only superstar in the cast. The other superstar in this movie, which is probably even more famous than Sandler, is HUMMUS. Zohan is absolutely addicted to HUMMUS, which is a spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas, blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. If you think it sounds nasty, it looks way nastier....(thankfully the bottled version looks much more presentable)

although I must admit that it looks like the chutney that we locals eat together with our thosai (which I actually think is yummy!)

But anyways, enough about hummus and icky looking goo.... what about the plot?

There are times where Sandler really manages to blow the house down with his antics and jokes, and certain parts are just totally over the top. However, the inane obsession with sex and sexual innuendos just wears thin pretty fast and definitely did not strike a chord with me.

Rottentomatoes.com said it best when one of their reviewers said:

"Sandler prefers to fall back on cartoonish stunt action, sleazy innuendo and bodily fluid gags. These things may satisfy his core fan-base, but everyone else will leave the cinema feeling a bit cheated."

Now, after reading all that, here ere are some REALLY weird things about the movie here in Malaysia...

1. Our country refuses to acknowledge any relations with Israel (including denying them an embassy here), but yet allows Zohan to reach our shores where the main storyline is about an Israeli counter-terrorist specialist.

2. But that's not the most ironic part.. .given the amount of sexual innuendo in the movie, our censorship boards decide to give it a rating of "U"!!!!

Yeah, go figure!
